Announcing Gothic Icons and the Historical Angst™ World of Darkness

Gothic Icons RMC

Sharing some big, gothacular news today for Fish Fool’s! I’m going to be one of the new developers for the Historical Angst™ World of Darkness. WOO!

Announcing an even Gothier Version of the World of Darkness—Now with More Historical Angst™!

Today on Fish Fool’s, Onyx Path Publishing is thrilled to announce an exciting change. Inspired by the success of the Dark Eras Kickstarter, the company has decided to overhaul every classic and new World of Darkness game in their catalog and will transport the entire line back to the nineteenth century, during the height of Gothic literature’s popularity, to add Historical Angst™!

“I was so impressed with the enthusiasm we got from fans, I turned to our developers after the Kickstarter was over and asked them if we should skip the modern day crap and focus on a more intriguing period of history,” Rich Thomas, CEO and President of Onyx Path Publishing said. “There were so many historical eras to choose from, it was hard to figure out which one would be the right fit for the entire World of Darkness. But then I thought, ‘Hey, what would Carmilla do?’ Then a black cat crossed my path, and I freaked out a little, but that onyx feline gave me an idea. Why not take all of our games and draw from horror’s roots? Sure, we’ve always dealt with symbolism and allegory from all aspects of the horror genre, but Gothic literature seems like a no-brainer. Believe me, there’s nothing gothier or angstier than those characters. They’re all supergoths, which is great for us and for the fans. And if I’m remembering right, some of them even had capes!”

“You know, at first I was really skeptical of this change because it’s something we hadn’t considered before. But after a while, the idea that we could tap into Historical Angst™ kind of grew on me,” said Eddy Webb, Vampire: the Masquerade developer. “I mean, think about it. In a way, Vampire wouldn’t exist without Gothic characters like the goth vampire Varney. This just makes sense.”

To highlight the new path Onyx Path Publishing will follow, the company has filed a trademark for the phrase Historical Angst™ and is offering a free download of Gothic Icons for fans to use in their new World of Darkness chronicles. Gothic Icons is a special collection of six, iconic Goth characters found in Gothic literature like the misguided wannabe goth Baron Vordenburg, who has never hunted vampires before and relies on a saber instead of a stake, or the gamer goth Countess Anna Fedotovna, an avid card player who favors the odds (Ace, 3, and 7 to be precise). The rules for the characters were created using the World of Darkness Rulebook and the God-Machine Chronicle character creation update.

New Way to View my To-Do List

There's a trojan on your computer

Figured out a new, simple way to organize my to-do list, and I thought I’d share it with you this afternoon. Instead of writing down a bunch of tasks or setting up categories based on area of my life and whatnot, I focus on my motivation for the things I have to do by basing it on what it means to me.

Mind: Work

Skull Emblem The category of the mind is related to The Day JobTM and bills. These are the tasks that I need to do in order to earn a living and maintain my current (and future) lifestyle. It doesn’t matter what the nature of that work is, whether it’s computer-related or not, because here I’m assigning a value to it.

Why didn’t I turn this into a dollar sign? For a few reasons. First, not everything I do for work has a financial value. There are some tasks, like reading or learning a new tool, etc. that help me expand my skillset, but they don’t earn a profit. The second reason why I’m not attaching a dollar sign to these tasks, is because I’m trying to train myself to focus on other forms of value as opposed to relying on dollars and cents. There’s a saying I hear repeated often, and that is: “Americans live to work, and the rest of the world works to live.” I’d much rather integrate what I do into my lifestyle to find the joy in it now, than burn myself out because I’m “supposed to” do the job for a life I may not even want.

Heart: Desire

lovemeheart
What’s in my heart? This is where I put all the things I want to do for myself, that aren’t necessarily attached to a financial value. The heart is all about desire. What I want to write, as opposed to what I have to write. What I want to do, even if it’s a small thing, instead of focusing on my obligations.

The reason why the type of tasks (or kind of work) doesn’t matter, is because the things I want to do may overlap with The Day JobTM. For example, I write, revise, and develop books and games for a living, seeing many games and supplements through to publication. This is what I get paid to do. Even though I enjoy my job, writing for myself is sometimes hard to justify because it’s on spec. That means, even if I finish the work and devote that time to it, I don’t see the value because I haven’t trained myself to see it. When I do have time, I may continue poking at a manuscript but, like a lot of writers I know, it becomes a challenge to figure out what to work on next that’ll benefit me the most. By attaching something as simple as a heart to my daily to-do list, I’m telling myself: “No, you really want this. Let’s break this up into smaller goals, so you’re still working towards The End without losing sight of the bigger picture.”

Last but not least…

Body: Health

handprintThis should be a no-brainer, but for someone like me who’s required to use her brain a lot… Well, it’s surprising how easy it is to forget about health-related matters. Like the things I want to do, they have to be done. But, unlike a necklace I design or a song I play, the benefits aren’t always immediate. By putting it on my to-do list, I’m reminding myself to do it today, not tomorrow.

Mind, Heart, Body. Sounds simple enough, right? What I need to do for work (Mind), what I want to do for myself (Heart), and what I have to do to be healthy (Body). Breaking up my task list into these three spheres helps me avoid spending too much time in one category or the other. I’ve found, too, it allows me to simplify what I need to accomplish. Love it or hate it, emotions are part and parcel of being human, and attaching value beyond the almighty dollar, calorie, or word count is my way of being realistic and… Well? More human.

    Mood: Mah brainpan is sizzling!
Caffeinated Beverages Consumed: Oh well. That’s a fight I gave up.
Work-Out Minutes Logged Yesterday: Wrote a lot, but managed to go for a short walk. Should repeat that today!
In My Ears: Echoes by Digitalism
Game Last Played: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Book Last Read: Currently reading Undertow by Elizabeth Bear.
    Movie Last Viewed: The Avengers
    Latest Artistic Project: Beading!
Latest Fiction/Comic Release: Last Man Zombie Standing.
Latest Game Release: Things Don’t Go Smooth
What I’m Working On: Primarily tie-in games work, original comics, and novels.

Reddit AMA Wrap-Up: Firefly, Alternate History, and Process

Wanted to pop in to say, first of all, a HUGE thanks to Steve Drew for reaching out to me. I had a blast answering questions for my Reddit AMA, and got the chance to offer some fun insight about my writing process, the Firefly RPG, and other passions of mine.

You can read the questions and my answers on this link: Happy Monday, Reddit! I’m Firefly RPG developer Monica Valentinelli.

The timing on this couldn’t be better! With GM’s Day starting tomorrow, DriveThruRPG.com has a ton of games–including the Firefly RPG at 30 percent off!

A Bucket o’ Fun Announcements

Good morning my fellow writers, game designers, and readers! I’m back from a wonderful writer’s retreat and am deep in the trenches. I’ve got a few announcements to make, so bear with me today.

  • Firefly RPG Wins 2nd Runner Up: In the Golden Geek Awards, the Firefly RPG won 2nd Runner Up behind Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition and Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition. Congrats to everyone who worked on this game, both past and present, and to the fans for voting! If you’re interested in trying out the RPG, the corebook is available in digital through DriveThruRPG.com and in print through www.margaretweis.com and wherever games are sold.
  • Reddit AMA in /r/Fantasy: Thanks to the support and prompting by Steve Drew, I’ll be on Reddit doing an AMA on Monday, March 2nd. Celebrating my 10th year in the gaming industry, so drop by and ask questions about the Firefly RPG or my earlier work. I’m keen on answering questions about the shiny new Smuggler’s Guide to the Rim.
  • Watch for me at GTS: I will be attending the Gama Trade Show in Las Vegas and will be presenting as a game designer/developer. Very excited about this! It’ll give me a chance to connect with other industry folks and retailers, and talk about some of my experiences that I’ve had over the past decade.
  • New Reward Tiers on the Dark Eras Kickstarter: A lot of fans are really interested in expanding the existing chapters in the Dark Eras supplement, and there’ll be new reward tiers announced later today. Drop by later and check ’em out! We’re in the final throes of this wild ride!
  • Build-a-World at Mo*Con: I’m happy to announce that I’ve confirmed I’ll be running my Build-a-World Game Show at Mo*Con X! Yay! There will be shenanigans! I am hoping to find a sponsor to pick up the tab for the charity donation. Last year, Steven Saus donated $50 on behalf of his publishing company at ConText, and the winning team got to choose which charity to put that money towards.

That’s all I have time for today. To the deadlines! They won’t wait!

Last Chance! Dark Eras KS Ends Saturday A.M.

World of Darkness Dark Eras

Almost 1,500 backers. Over $90,000. And FOUR DAYS left!!! Wanted to give you an update that new reward tiers and polls will be launched as we ramp up to the end.

Thanks to all of you who backed the Dark Eras Kickstarter, shared your thoughts, and voted for this uniquely-developed book to add new Eras!

And thanks to those of you who’ve been reading along. The fact that I’m part of a Kickstarter isn’t easy on your end, simply because of the frequent updates you’re often subjected to. I do realize that and try to opt for the middle ground. I appreciate your support for my work either way. You rock!
