Quick Warning. . . Er. . .Note About The 13

13

Just a quick update for those of you who applied to become one of The Thirteen. Thank you. I’ve been overwhelmed with your kind words and continued interest in my work. Here’s what happens next: over the next few days, I’ll be sorting through the applications, penning the rules, and putting a framework in place. Then?

Anyone who applied will receive an e-mail from me on Halloween noting whether or not you’re in the group and a number denoting your seat at the table. At that time, I’ll be asking you for your name and mailing address so I can send you a “Thank You!” in the mail. (Yes, I do that. The post office send letters with a stamp thing.)

This also means, however, that applications for 2012 are now closed.

Final Days for The 13

13 Just a quick note to let you know I’m over at FlamesRising.com today talking about The Thirteen. There, I mentioned some of the works I’ve done since I first started blogging and reviewing for the site.

If you haven’t applied, there’s still time. For the latest update, read “The 13. Final Days to Apply.”

If you have? I’ll be contacting you on the thirteenth and let you know either way.

Good luck!

A Change Is In The Dungeon

I regret to announce that Thursday, September 13th was my last day for Steve Jackson Games. The more I got settled into the position, the more it became clearer to everyone that they needed someone down in Austin. Steve Jackson Games manufactures both toys and games and, as a result, everything that they do is very visual and requires on-site interaction and knowledge. Telecommuting can work to a point, but it’s not the same as being down there. The company is growing rapidly and my position as Marketing Director is crucial to their continued success.

While I was offered the position in Austin, I felt that relocating was not a good option for me. When I initially signed on, the flexibility helped take the pressure off of me so I could write, edit, and design games in my off-hours. I still want to do this crazy writing thing as a career and relocating for a full-time gig just didn’t jive with that goal.

I will still be connected to them through my work with John Kovalic and, of course, whenever I play their games. It’s an amicable, bittersweet parting but also a very emotional one. The staff is absolutely tremendous, highly-talented, and many of them are now my friends. Hard to leave such a great group and a demanding (but rewarding) job. There’s no doubt in my mind that everyone there will continue to fare well and make amazing games and toys.

If you’re interested in working with the company, be sure to bookmark the job opportunities page. I’ll likely write a few other posts about what I’m up to later this week or next.

The 13. A FAQ List.

A number of submissions have been trickling in for The Thirteen. With that, however, I’ve received a lot of questions as well. Today, I address those inquiries. If you have any other questions, feel free to post them in the comments below!

Are You Saying That Your Readers Will Direct Your Storytelling? Your career?

No, and I’m sorry if it seemed like that was the case. I am the captain of my own ship. Feedback will be taken into consideration, much like comments from a group of beta readers or critiques would shape a story. But there are many reasons, professional and ethical, why that would be a terrible and horrendous idea.

Will you share everything you’re working on?

For many reasons, I can’t do that. To start, there will be a couple of short stories so the group can get familiar with one another and with my work. Then we’ll take it from there.

Is everyone going to be accepted?

If I accepted everyone, then there would be no point to an application process. 🙂 The reason why I’m making this a closed group, though, is because these are people that I need to feel comfortable with both professionally and personally over the long haul.

You’re very brave. Why are you doing this again?

Could I write in a bubble? Sell books and my stories on my own? Yes. But I believe the artistic process is strengthened through the relationship between writer and reader, painter and viewer, photographer and subject, etc. etc. etc. Seeing first-hand what readers do and do not like will keep me grounded. Having a close-knit group of people to interact with will also ensure my heart and my head is in the right place — focused on my work.

If you think about it, some writers do this already by posting their stories online for feedback or giving readers password-protected access. This is a little more involved than that because I’m giving people the chance to get to know me and my work (and vice versa). That’s why this is closed. Because this would never work otherwise.

Who has applied so far?

Readers, slush pile editors, aspiring authors, and a few people I’ve met at conventions. The majority of applicants are familiar with my work though there are a few who aren’t.

Are applications still open?

Yep! I am taking applications through October 13th. Then, I’ll be letting those who applied know whether or not they’re in the group, and I’ll see what spaces are open from there. Once the group is launched, I’ll have a page on my blog with updates.

To apply, read this original post for details.
